Recommended Mid-range Dress Watches

This category is more focused on the movement, rather than the looks of the watch. Since the price range is starting to move into some higher quality movements begin to matter a lot more than when looking at entry-level watches. The mid-range watches are generally speaking good quality.

To be honest, as long as you purchase a watch made from a reputable company (Swatch Group, i.e. Omega, Longines, Certina, Tissot, Hamilton, and more) you should be fine quality-wise.

The price of a mid-range watch can vary a lot between brands. The mid-range watches includes some unique details which is saved on entry-level watches. The movements made for this price range can be swiss and from known brands. You will see both Tissot, Omega (used), Oris, Longines and other brands with a good reputation. Most of the time it will come down to which brand you like as the movement will be the same on most of the watches.

However, you should be aware brands use the ETA movements and modify them slightly and make them a brand movement. E.g. the ETA 2824-2 is very similar to the Tag Heuer Calibre 5. Remember, that the ETA 2824-2 is a good movement so this is no problem. However, a Tag Heuer with the Calibre 5 can cost the double of a watch marketed with an ETA-2824-2 movement.

Certina DS-1 Collection

The Certina DS collection has a great variety of dials and straps. The watch can come with white dial, black dial, stainless steel bracelet, or leather strap. I must say that this watch is A+ quality for its money. However, I am biased is an own the watch, but I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase the watch again.

The Certina DS-1 series is running at approximately $350-$500 on Jomashop, which is on the low scale for the mid-range watches. It is one hell of a bargain. You can see the watch at Jomashop.com (Opens a new window in Jomashop).

You should purchase the Certina DS-1 because:

  • Stainless steel bracelet (fold-over claps) or leather strap (deployment clasp).
  • ETA 2824-2 movement.
  • 100 meters water resistant (you can wear this watch to the beach).
  • Certina has the concept called “DS” which stands for Double Security. A concept developed to keep the watches resistant to temperature change, shocks, and water/moisture.
  • Part of the Swatch Group, known for quality.
  • A lot of value for money, underrated watch manufacturer.
